The Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology runs for one day a week (currently a Tuesday) during normal academic term time. It is normally completed in two years, though it can be taken over four years.
In this course, students will be introduced to the literature and theology of the Old Testament [5 credits]

In this course, students will be introduced to major Christian doctrines [5 credits]
This courses introduces students to biblical hermeneutics (i.e. biblical interpretation) in historical and theological perspective; including case studies and practical exposition. [20 credits]
This course provides an in-depth exploration of the nature, history, and theology of Christian preaching, including its application in practical settings. [20 credits]
In this course, students will explore different approaches to evangelism in a contemporary context [5 credits]
In this course, students will explore different approaches to Christian apologetics in a contemporary context [5 credits]
In this course, students will explore the theology and practice of Christian discipleship [5 credits]
In this course, students will explore the theology and practice of biblical leadership [5 credits]
In this course, students will explore the theology, history, and practice of prayer and revival [5 credits]
This module unites developmental theory with faith and practice in order to minister effectively in various contexts. Students will develop communication skills and proficiency in planning and management – all against the backdrop of their own growing spiritual integrity. [5 credits]
This module studies the teachings of Christ from the Sermon on the Mount. Students will study how a person is changed as a believer and how this influences their relationships with others. [5 credits]
In this course, students will explore the theology and practice of pastoral care [5 credits]
Who is this course for?
The Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology is for people who want to go deeper in their understanding of God’s word and be better equipped to serve in their local church context. Some students use the Foundation Certificate as a basis for further study.
How is the course delivered?
The Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology is delivered in person on Tuesdays at the Faith Mission Bible College in Edinburgh. The Foundation Certificate is normally completed in two years, but there is the option to complete it over two years if that suits your circumstances better,
When does the course run?
Foundation Certificate students study in Edinburgh on Tuesdays from September – December (Semester 1) and January – April (Semester 2). There are no placements as part of the Foundation Certificate.
Who will be teaching the course?
The majority of modules are taught by our expert and experienced faculty. Some modules are taught by sessional lecturers, with relevant expertise and/or ministry experience.
Can I stay at the Faith Mission Bible College?
Yes. Students studying on the Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology can book a room on the Monday night when required (subject to availability).
What does it cost?

There is no application fee, but a £100 non-refundable deposit is payable on acceptance to the course.
What sort of assessments do I have to complete?
Our modules are assessed by a variety of methods including essays, examinations, presentations, weekly tests, reflective exercises, and group discussions.
Is there the possibility to join the Faith Mission upon graduation?
Not directly. Those applying to join the Faith Mission would normally be expected to complete the Diploma in Applied Theology first. However, the Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology can serve as a stepping stone to the Diploma in Applied Theology.
Is the Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology externally validated?
No, the Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology is not externally validated. The programme is equivalent to the learning outcomes of SCQF Level 7, but does not lead to an externally validated qualification. All students who successfully complete the Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology will receive their award as part of FMBC’s graduation service and will receive a transcript of their grades.
What can I do after graduating with the Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology?
The Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology is designed to equip Christians to serve in their local contexts, so many return to their jobs after graduating but better equipped to serve Christ in their churches and communities, whether as elders, small group leaders, or Sunday school teachers. That being said, some graduates from the Foundation Certificate have gone onto serve with churches in a full-time capacity or have progressed to further studies.
